His name is Praeteritus. You won't forget him.

If you haven't discovered Roberto Calas yet, come to the table hungry and prepare to feast. This novella is a good place to start reading his work but in reality there are no bad places. All of his historical fictions are a crenellated summit of gritty realism, captivating plot lines, medieval arcana, and lovable and loathsome characters bantering believable and engaging dialogue. On the dark canvas of the Dark Ages the author paints stories that are often bleak and sometimes horrifying... until he lobs in a humorous phosphorus grenade that explodes with white hot hilarity. I'm talking spit-out-your-half-swallowed-beverage funny.
This is not a long book and that, as other reviewers have noted, is it's only short coming. It is, to borrow a term from C.S. Lewis, a supposal. And a brilliant supposal at that. Suppose a terminally sick person is given the last rites and then is later pronounced dead by the Church? And what if he decides to get better without their permission? Such a one would be an abomination, driven from home, shorn of family and friends, and forced to survive anyway he could. And just suppose a venal and rapacious bishop sought to enslave and utilize such a man as this for his own ends. Would that 'dead' man really be free to do whatever he pleases because he had been given the rites and absolved of sin for all time? Would he follow orders, no matter how onerous, just to survive and gain a modicum of acceptance? And what price would those actions exact on a man's soul? Oh, and how could he possibly win the girl with such a resume?
This is the world of Praeteritus. His name means 'Forgotten' and he survives each day believing he is neglected of God and despised by all who know what he is. He is a character plucked from Calas' novel: The Scourge; Nostrum, and this is his back story. For Praeteritus, 'Whatever kills you, makes you stronger' and strong he is. A Titan among mere men. Underneath his pox scarred skin lies quarry hardened muscles and a guttering conscience that is all but extinguished. If this man is sent for you, pray. And if you hear the shriek of the spiked ball and chain of his flail whistling behind you, it's already too late.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST

This is a short story which tells of a time when the line between life and death was very blurred. The Middle Ages when people were often buried alive or flirted with Brother Death. Mr. Calas certainly knows something of this world. His research in admirable. The idea of the Church using a zombie to avenge wrongs helps them dispose neatly with the problem of sin. There is humor here too.
It is too quick to give us deep insights, but we aren't bored along the way.

Great Series. You get all five books in this box set

I really enjoyed the Pride Series. This box set has all 5 books. My only complaint would be that the last book in the series is actually the first book to take place. That is ok though because it is also a shorter story then the rest. It almost feels like an after thought.

You fall in love with the Jordan family. The first book is Todd Jordan's book. Megan has come from an abusive relationship and is looking for a place to heal. She finds out that her only brother has died before she has a chance to reconnect to him. Todd was Matt's best friend and he is determined to watch out for his sister and help her heal.

Loved this book. I fell in love with the whole Jordan family and could not wait to see what would happen to Lacey and Ian.

I think of all the books Ian's was my favorite. By the time you reach Ian's book you have come to love him in the other books. This is a really good package set. Well worth the money for what you get

The Education of a Modern Poker Player is the product of JB's cunning plan, and documents his progress from being unable to beat NL10 to establishing himself on NL100. Over the course of this entertaining book, TT and Manu explain how to beat these small stakes games, and illustrate all the important concepts with real example hands. There is a particular focus on Fast Fold Games, such as Rush and Zoom, in which JB eventually became a specialist, and practical explanations of how to take advantage of weak players in this format.

John Billingham is a maths professor who, when he’s not solving equations, has always been keen on games, particularly chess, which he plays to a reasonable standard. The Education of a Modern Poker Player documents his progress, under TT and Manu’s expert guidance, from fish to not quite as much of a fish.

Thomas Tiroch (TwiceT) is a businessman, professional poker player, coach and video producer for Pokerstrategy.com. He has used the money that he won playing poker to finance the many companies he and his business partners have started. Over the course of the book, TT will support and mentor JB through his struggle to master the basics of poker,

 

Emanuel Cinca is a professional poker player, coach and video producer for Pokerstrategy.com, where he has become well-known for his lengthy and sophisticated analyses of members’ hand histories. Ten years after Lee Jones

The game has changed, so have several key ideas. Perhaps the best exposition of 3 betting light ever written. I especially liked how position was explained in terms of 'streets of value' and pot-control instead of more traditional approaches. Not exactly new info, but concise and thought provoking. I recognized several leaks in my own game and will make adjustments. I also understand what those adjustments should be. Would have been 5 star had it focused more on live play. Well worth a read.

A very modern poker book with instructive examples of play

'Education of a Modern Poker Player' is an excellent book aimed at the online player with a certain level of online no-limit Texas hold'em cash-game experience. There is a surprising amount of bang-up-to-date insight within its pages, and the book might even become a classic, were it not for the rapidly changing world that is its subject. Wisely, it doesn't waste time in bringing complete beginners up to speed, instead assuming some basic knowledge of strategy, relative hand-values, and online tracking software.

The instructive hand examples are the best part for me, but I was enlightened by the emphasis on the utter necessity for success of a strong mind-set, and enjoyed the Interlude on five-card draw, and even the risk-of-ruin derivation. It's fun and motivating to see glimpses of the first author's progress through the stakes, guided by two strong coaches, and there is a lot of high-quality hand-analysis that is missing from most books. The main reason I don't award the book five stars is that I would have liked to see even more hand examples and cash-game theory; I also would have appreciated a smattering of high-quality diagrams or table screenshots to illustrate the action and break up the text. And perhaps some hands played by the coaches, along with Billingham's attempts to predict their moves, would have been entertaining and instructive.

I remain unconvinced by the book that learning about game theory is of substantive practical use, but am probably biased by my lack of comprehension.

Perhaps a link for readers to an accompanying free video in which the two coaches sweat Billingham's play would have nicely rounded out the project, but I'm not complaining. Overall, a solid achievement that will reward repeated reading.

Interesting read

From the start let me say that this is a good book. Its authors approach the subject of teaching modern poker to a beginner who would like to be brought up to speed with what works today. The style advocated feels very loose-aggressive but I will leave other reviews to offer their impressions on this publication.
