Drilling for oil is a dirty business, and for Bill Murphy, it’s about to turn positively filthy. But Murphy’s as big and tough as his home state of Texas—a man in the mold of a young John Wayne—and he’s more than a match for everything the oil-rich land of Venezuela can throw at him. Everything, that is, except for one woman . . .
Her name is Marcia Stewart. She’s fiery, she’s brave, and she’s beautiful . . . and she’d like nothing better than to see Bill Murphy dead. Her oilman father’s been killed, and Marcia tags Murphy as the murderer.
Murphy’s guilty of a lot of things, but murder’s not one of them. He’s drilling down for the truth, and now it’s his land, his love for Marcia—and his life—that are on the line. With so much at stake, he’ll go to any length to come out on top of the Black Towers to Danger.
When Black Towers to Danger was first published in 1936, the editor wrote: “L. Ron Hubbard, as you know, is a pilot, a writer and an engineer. The one thing he doesn’t work at is engineering. He was in China at 15 and has covered a lot of territory since then. If he’s on a flying field—or anywhere else—you can’t miss him—he’s a tall, slender chap with very fair skin and bright red hair. Something picturesque about him as there should be about a flyer.” And not only was he a man with a commanding presence, so too did he have command over his material, researching the entire oil drilling process for this story.

The fast-moving action that&'s a trademark of Hubbard&'s pulp fiction is present from the very first page of this exciting novella (set in South America), which is stronger on plot than on character. The pressure&'s on Bill Murphy, a Texas oilman who owns wells in Venezuela, after a new government order about concession improvement gives him just 30 days to prove that one of his wells will produce oil. That&'s not all. An American competitor named Stewart has just been murdered, and Stewart&'s attractive daughter, Marcia, believes Murphy is responsible. Marcia tells the men under her command to shoot Murphy on sight, but he survives long enough to be taken into custody by the corrupt local police. Will he manage to escape long enough to clear his name and get his well to produce? There aren&'t a lot of surprises, but readers looking for a quick dose of escapism will be pleased. (Oct.)
From Booklist
This novella, first published in 1936, tells the story of Texas oilman Bill Murphy, who’s in love with the beautiful Marcia Stewart. Naturally, this being pulp fiction, she despises him, believing Murphy killed her father. Can Murphy prove he’s innocent, save his vast empire, and win the girl? Hubbard is at the top of his game here, hooking us with the setup and reeling us in with his larger-than-life characters and rough-and-tumble story. The book is ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Jim Thompson’s classic South of Heaven, which was published 30-odd years later but features a similar setting and theme. Most of the Hubbard reissues feature a main story plus one or two smaller stories, but this one stands alone, which is just fine. --David Pitt

Black Towers to Danger
By Steven Brandt @ Audiobook-Heaven
The Venezuelan government has decreed that all oil wells must produce, or be shut down. That gives Texas oilman Bill Murphy exactly 30 days to get his rigs in the area pumping oil. To complicate matters, one of Murphy’s chief competitors is murdered, and Murphy is falsely accused of the crime. Captured by the local police, who reek of cheap cigars and corruption alike, Murphy will have to scramble to clear his name and get oil wells pumping. Oh, and did I mention that the murdered man’s daughter has ordered her men to shoot Murphy on sight? Whew, doesn’t look good.
L Ron Hubbard is widely known as a science fiction writer, but in reality he was so much more than that. In the 1930’s and 40’s, Hubbard published literally hundreds of stories, and a large number of them were not sci-fi. Air adventure, sea adventure, western: you name it, Hubbard wrote it. The one constant through all of the genres he covered, was his own simple, yet elegant, prose. Hubbard just had a way with words that many writers aspire to, but few achieve.
Black Towers to Danger is part of Galaxy Audio’s project to publish more than 200 of Hubbard’s golden age stories in an audio format. These are multicast productions complete with music and sound enhancements, and the audio quality is absolutely stunning. The stereo effects put you right in the middle of the story. Voice talents for this particular story include R F Daley as the narrator, Edwards, and O’Malley; Josh Robert Thompson as Bill Murphy and Cueto; Christina Huntington as Marcia Stewart; Tait Ruppert voicing nine different parts, and Bob Caso in six parts. These are just a few of Galaxy’s regular cast and I can tell you that they are among the more talented and diverse performers in the business.

An Exciting Action Adventure Story
By Scott Haraburda
This audiobook, Black Towers to Danger , is a story about oilman, set deep in South America. In the country of Venezuela, during a time in which the law was based upon the rules of the man with the gun. This story contained murder, corrupt police, and a beautiful girl. This author is known for applying opposing extremes in his adventure stories, in this story from an assassin trying to kill the protagonist, who hopes that the girl hating hime will ever fall in love with him again.
The author, L. Ron Hubbard, is best known for his research on the subject of Dianetics and later Scientology . What most people may not realize is that he was a prolific fiction writer from 1932 to 1950. And, this story was from that era. With over 300 works, Hubbard wrote in different story genre, including Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, and Western. He was also known to have used various pseudonyms, including Legionnaire 148, Lieutenant Scott Morgan, John Seabrook, Tom Esterbrook, and Mister Spectator. The three stories in this set were probably influenced from this own military service in the US Navy in the 1940s, including World War II. Although he served, much of it was spent ashore in the continental US. And, his claims of what he did in the military conflicts with the official records.
With a multicast presentation, this audiobook was very entertaining. The narrators from Golden Age Stories allows one to lose themselves in this book with no noticeable problems that pulled one out of the story. In addition to the different voices this book was peppered with music and sound effects, making one believe that the protagonist is escaping a posse of corrupt police with orders to shoot him on site. All, enhancing this exciting adventure story.
Even though this adventure story about oilmen, and many of others from this author, were first published almost 80 years ago, I enjoyed listening to it today while believing that it could have just as easily been written within the last few years. This was my eighth audio book from this author, and I look forward to hearing more. A great listen for anyone wanting to enjoy a good short story on a long road-trip. Overall, if you like intriguing on-your-seat adventure stories, this audiobook, Black Towers to Danger, is worth listening. It’s an exciting fast-paced adventure story.
