About the Author
Black Market Baby is written under a pen name to protect the identities of those involved. I was born and raised in Canada and moved to the US to get away from the strangling political atmosphere in Quebec during the 1970s. I was finally drawn to the West - the Rocky Mountains - where I love to hike and eventually wound up at the Pacific Ocean.

Just say, "NO."

I put this down 20 percent through, feeling as if I gave it a fair shot. The writer's biographical narrative was fine. The little history blurbs were superficial and included facts commonly known and were not really integrated into the narrative. There were footnoted comments about adoption, but difficult to find the source in the kindle edition. The author included extensive quotes from psychic readings - I'm not really into that as a source. All in all, I decided that I was reading about a character I didn't really like very much and came to suspect that she was using her adoption as an excuse, as opposed to a reason, for being screwed up. At what point do you take responsibility? Hopefully before your self-centered decision making affects your three kids. Not a fan of the book.

Long winded and self absorbed

I get it, she was adopted. I will say that I am not adopted, but my husband is and so are other people I know. This woman seems to blame everything that is wrong in her life on the fact that she was adopted when she was a few days old because her young, unmarried mother was unable to keep her, due to her circumstances and at the time it was a scandal. From that perspective - which she seems to have either forgotten or ignored - it seems her birth mother did the best thing for her. Her adoptive parents couldn't cope with the reality, and yes, it is hard and wrong, but to keep going on and on about it is not healthy. There are millions of kids who have less than she did and does, and yet all that she could think about was herself. If her relationship was that bad with the couple who brought her up then she should have done better by her own kids, not treated them as badly or worse than she herself was. I couldn't finish the book, after 3 days I still wasn't half way through (I generally read a book this length in a couple of days) and the self pitying was too much. She got adopted, grew up, got married, had 3 kids, got divorced, ex "took" 2 of the girls away from her and she spent the rest of the time packing up and moving herself, her partner and the other girl from one side of the States to the other, including going through Canada - of course her girls felt insecure they were never anywhere long enough to build a life and a foundation for their futures. Not worth the read and to be honest, is insulting to others in her position.

Pity Party

The author blames everything wrong in her life on being adopted. By doing so she alienates herself from her parents, children and nearly everyone who cared about her. She never grows up, never takes responsibility for any of her actions, treats her family - especially her daughter's - like crap, runs away from everything (hence all her moving around), smokes pot and is generally the most selfish, immature, boring person I've ever read about. "My mom treats me like crap. Must be because I'm adopted." "I'm unhappy, must be because I'm adopted." "I'm doing pot, must be because I'm adopted." "I've alienated my own children from me, must be because I'm adopted." When will she grow up, get some real therapy, quit relying on psychics, accept responsibility for her actions, QUIT WHINING and quit blaming everything on being adopted? There are plenty of well adjusted, happy, secure individuals who've been adopted out there. I hate to say it, but this woman is extremely boring, extremely emotionally stunted, extremely wordy about things that don't add to her search for her bioparents (how much hiking info does an adoption story need???) and is basically admitting she's spent her entire life wallowing in a self thrown pity party.
I hope that at least her daughter's have gotten the help they need to overcome their mother's neglect. I'd love to hear this tale from their point of view. I'm somehow sure it's much different from this author's view.
I can't recommend this book to anyone. I'm glad it was free. I only finished it because I hoped it would have some resolution, but had to skim through a good 70% of it because it was THAT boring.
