John Billingham is a maths professor who, when he’s not solving equations, has always been keen on games, particularly chess, which he plays to a reasonable standard. Ten years after Lee Jones

The game has changed, so have several key ideas. Perhaps the best exposition of 3 betting light ever written. I especially liked how position was explained in terms of 'streets of value' and pot-control instead of more traditional approaches. Not exactly new info, but concise and thought provoking. I recognized several leaks in my own game and will make adjustments. I also understand what those adjustments should be. Would have been 5 star had it focused more on live play. Well worth a read.

A very modern poker book with instructive examples of play

'Education of a Modern Poker Player' is an excellent book aimed at the online player with a certain level of online no-limit Texas hold'em cash-game experience. There is a surprising amount of bang-up-to-date insight within its pages, and the book might even become a classic, were it not for the rapidly changing world that is its subject. Wisely, it doesn't waste time in bringing complete beginners up to speed, instead assuming some basic knowledge of strategy, relative hand-values, and online tracking software.

The instructive hand examples are the best part for me, but I was enlightened by the emphasis on the utter necessity for success of a strong mind-set, and enjoyed the Interlude on five-card draw, and even the risk-of-ruin derivation. It's fun and motivating to see glimpses of the first author's progress through the stakes, guided by two strong coaches, and there is a lot of high-quality hand-analysis that is missing from most books. The main reason I don't award the book five stars is that I would have liked to see even more hand examples and cash-game theory; I also would have appreciated a smattering of high-quality diagrams or table screenshots to illustrate the action and break up the text. And perhaps some hands played by the coaches, along with Billingham's attempts to predict their moves, would have been entertaining and instructive.

I remain unconvinced by the book that learning about game theory is of substantive practical use, but am probably biased by my lack of comprehension.

Perhaps a link for readers to an accompanying free video in which the two coaches sweat Billingham's play would have nicely rounded out the project, but I'm not complaining. Overall, a solid achievement that will reward repeated reading.

From the start let me say that this is a good book. Its authors approach the subject of teaching modern poker to a beginner who would like to be brought up to speed with what works today. The style advocated feels very loose-aggressive but I will leave other reviews to offer their impressions on this publication.

What was your inspiration for this book?
My dear, quirky friend did telephone sex for a short period while she was pregnant. Her wild, outrageous stories made me laugh and inspired me.
Who's your favorite character?
It's a draw between Polly, the tough talking, soft-hearted lawyer, and Edna, the grandmother who knits as she does telephone sex. Wonderful gals, both of them.

A whole lot of not much

I think this book could be really entertaining, I just kept finding myself wishing the author had put a little more thought into what her characters were doing.

A phone sex operator with a baby? That's awesome, with lots of potential for hilarity (omg a call in the produce section?!)
A freelance reporter raising a toddler who gets hired for an exposé on phone sex operators?
Okay, who can tell me where this is going?

I wanted to be entertained by this book, but I wasn't. There were too many misunderstandings, too many lies, and quite frankly too much of an undertone of "let the men handle this, sweetie." It didn't come across overtly, but I never really got the impression that Maxine was so super capable. Without getting into too many spoilers, I think too many of the problems in the book got solved by men for the women, vs with them, or even by the women themselves.
Maybe it's because all of them are *described* as capable, but where we join the story their lives are starting to fall apart? I don't know. I just know I was irritated with them. A lot.

I can't even get into my thoughts on the "hero" because of all the spoilers it would involve.

Lies, betrayal, and forgiveness that comes way too easily. For all the talk about Maxine having a spine, I don't think she spoke her mind nearly enough.

Cute Story!

I love a book with a bit of spice that makes me chuckle. I have read so many of Bobby's books and loved almost all of them, but this one is near the top of the list.
Harry is a hunk...and just insecure enough to kick it up to adorable! Maxine cracks me up doing her everyday chores while having phone sex! Her mouthy friend Polly is a hoot.,

Awesome story

Have you ever wondered about those phone sex operators? I mean really do you think they are as hot as they sound or as sexually turned on as you are? Well this book will show you the life of 2 lady's who run a phone sex line from Maxine's house in the suburbs of Vancouver.

Maxine is a stay at home mom who when found out she was pregnant lost her job & the jerk boyfriend left her after taking her savings. So she took the only job that would allow her to work from home while taking care of her baby. So dressed in unattractive clothes & baby gunk she talks sex to guys who call.

Harry also a stay at home parent is a free lance writer who needs money so when a editor asks him to write an expose on phone sex operators he takes it. He happens to find Maxine's number in the yellow pages and starts talking to her about everything but sex. Both of course are using fake names & a few other lies to protect themselves. Part of the story is he has to meet her, so they meet in a restaurant and everything goes south in a hurry. After Maxine walks out thinking he can't handle her job and she thinks he is married.

By pure coincidence they meet at a daycare in their everyday clothes with their kids. There they start to see each other in a new light. So the question remains will the article that Harry is writing help or hurt his chances with Maxine?

I give this book a 4.5 stars. The story was great the supporting characters added a great deal to the story. I loved it
