About the Author
J. B. West (1912–1983), chief usher of the White House—or executive director of the executive mansion and grounds—was once called “the most powerful man in Washington next to the president.” Discreet and witty, he supervised the large permanent staff that provided for every personal want and need for six presidents and first ladies, including at state dinners, weddings, and funerals, redecorating the facilities for each family and tending to every special request. He served first as assistant to the chief usher and then as chief usher after retiring as a high-level civilian officer of the US Navy. A native Iowan, his White House tenure (1941–1969) followed a career in the Veterans Administration. Upstairs at the White House was published in 1973 and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for months, with more than five hundred extraordinarily positive reviews, editions in seven languages, and more than two million copies sold in the US across hardcover and paperback formats.

Mary Lynn Kotz, the author of four books, is a freelance magazine journalist based in Washington, DC. A contributing editor of ARTnews, she has written many cover stories, including “A Day with Georgia O’Keeffe.” Her book Rauschenberg: Art and Life is the biography of the late American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008), about whom she has given illustrated lectures at more than seventy museums and festivals, including at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Dignified and Fascinating

J.B. West, the former Chief Usher at The White House, gives us an insider's view of America's most famous mansion. But this is hardly a boring house tour. Mr. West - in a dignified but very readable account - focuses on the Presidents, First Ladies, and their children, all who made this house on Pennsylvania Avenue a home. With great empathy and appreciation, he recalls the experience of working for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry and Bess Truman, Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower, John and Jacqueline Kennedy, and Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson.
Each family had their own style that the White House staff had to adjust to, from the reserved Roosevelts, to the refined young Kennedys, to the big-as-Texas style of Lyndon Baines Johnson which was in contrast with Lady Bird, his considerate and composed wife.
His portrayals of the First Families are not condescending, yet they are still very respectful. In his position, Mr. West worked closely with the First Ladies and each one had personal qualities that he grew to admire.
The accounts of ceremonies, dinners and banquets, remodelings, sudden changes, and visits by various dignitaries are all compelling reading in themselves. But we get an even more significant historical viewpoint through the description of the events that took place in The White House during crises, such as FDR's death, the attempted shooting of Truman, the Kennedy assasination, LBJ's announcement that he would not seek another term.
Surely, there were frustrations, and many of them are recorded in the book while others were avoided. For instance, I'm sure that Mr. West knew about some of JFK's White House trysts but chose not to write about them. If he would have, the book would have been even more successful than it was.
But Mr. West takes the high road, and we get to enjoy the view with him.

A very different view of the White House

A story that is told so simply that it has the ring of truth about it. You almost expect an Upstairs Downstairs type of story but it is nothing like it. This book gave a great measure of humanity to the Presidents it covers and their First Ladies showing just how influential the Ladies were. Highly reccommended

Good read, but some issues with readability

I am currently reading it, and although I enjoy the glimpse behind the scenes, but often find its readability lacking. I lived in DC for years and would often walk or drive past the White House on my way to or from work. So hearing about the daily life behind those enormous white walls is really fascinating. However, sometimes the text resembles more a list of short statements about a person or an incident than an actual story. It then becomes a bit dry and doesn't 'flow'. I am sometimes also confused with the time line, as I've noticed that often events are not told in a strict chronological order. However, despite these readability issues, I am enjoying it.

Creativity Exercises

If we stop and think about it, creativity, which can in very simple terms be looked at as taking an original approach to a task that would not be considered in the normal procedures, is both one of the least understood and most important, or vital, skills for all of us to have. It is misunderstood because many of us feel, incorrectly, that it is something possessed only by brilliant scientists, technologists or businesspersons, and is not something we can make use of in our daily life. It is vital because, with the pace of change in business and working life today, with whole industries coming and going in the space of a few years or even months, creativity is a versatile skill that companies and organizations are willing and able to pay for, and they pay. A lot.

The good news for you and I is that this is a skill that we can develop, with just a little motivation and some knowledge of the processes involved. In these short exercises (of about five to ten minutes each, in most cases, from reading through to execution) we will be developing our creativity in the best way possible: by using the skills on real world problems in our own life.

For each exercise, please do three things.

One, get yourself into an environment where you can concentrate one hundred percent on the exercise with no distractions. Shut the cell off, lock the door of your office, put a cartoon on to keep your kids occupied, tell your boss you are with a vital client, do whatever you need. No interruptions. Period.

Two, no matter how crazy the exercise may seem, engage in it totally and without judgment for the five or ten minutes. Criticize it afterward if you want, but while you are doing it go full on, no holds barred, full speed ahead, as though you were in a sprint with your life depending on the outcome.

Three, even if you don't feel you are creative, suspend your lack of belief for the five to ten minutes and act as if you are the most creative person you know. If you have trouble doing this as yourself, then play a little make believe, be like a kid again and imagine yourself as being reincarnated or reborn as a person you feel is very creative, and that you truly admire, and do the exercise as if you were that person. So if you feel Walt Disney or Oprah or Bill Gates or Martha Stewart or your next door neighbor is creative, pretend you are them, and then do the exercise as them.

If you will do these three things and go full on doing one of these exercises for five or ten minutes five days of the week, taking the weekends off, for even a couple of weeks, ten exercises total, you will be amazed at your progress. Complete the series, and you may not even recognize yourself, in some ways, by about halfway through! The change is that dramatic!

There is little doubt that people who are searching for inspiration will definitely enjoy Creativity.  While many books offer the reader only empty rhetoric about changing their lives, this is one of the few self-help books that I've ever encountered which offers a roadmap to getting from point A to point B.   Best of all, there isn't any preaching to be found within Creativity.  Instead, the whole point is that the reader begin exploring their own minds instead of that of the author, that they use the provided exercises to uncover hidden potential, reveal amazing self-truths, and examine their motivations for doing things which they may have not realized existed before.  Once we know more about ourselves and are better able to cast away the limitations and anxieties that seek to chain us to our daily routines, we can finally find happier, more fulfilling lives.  Creativity helps us to get there more quickly than we otherwise would have on our own by offering us these brilliant, quick exercises.


Since I started with the exercises in this book, I not only feel better but I believe I'm a better person.  I have more knowledge of myself, my motivations, and the negative influences that can affect my happiness to a greater degree than I ever had before.  This has allowed for me to sustain better relationships with people in my life as well as to become more creative and content in my personal life.  If you feel like that life has gotten you down and there doesn't seem to be any way out of your self-imposed trap, then you're dead wrong.   Understanding the real problems that are often obfuscated due to the inability to reflect on our own selves will help for you to improve your mood and life in general.  Start with a few exercises from Creativity, an excellent book for delving into your own mental processes and finally understanding yourself.  I recommend it for all those who are lost in life and need a little guidance.

A Great Resource of Techniques and Strategies For Improving Both Your Business And Personal Life

Creativity by Dr. Andrew M. Goodman is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to enact real change in their own life. The exercises included are proven ways to quickly and easily begin moving in a positive direction. One can begin immediately using the techniques taught in the book, as all are easily accessible to the reader. Unlike similar books that often recommend purchasing extra materials, the mental exercises highlighted in this book require no more than perhaps a pencil and a piece of paper in order for the person to begin. That isn't to say that they're any less effective than those more expensive exercises. In fact, they work amazingly well, although each one has a specific purpose. Some are purely motivational exercises, while others serve to boost creativity or self reflection. Regardless of whether you're looking to simply become happier or to develop the right mindset for success in business, much can be learned from this short yet engaging read.

What I enjoyed most about Creativity was how it transcended the genre by offering concrete strategies that people can readily pursue. So many motivational books and texts similar to this one preach the power of positive thinking, but don't go the extra step of actually providing exercises that people are supposed to use in order to maintain and benefit from such thinking. It isn't enough to simply tell people to think more positively, when they are often burdened by negative emotions and bad thoughts. In Creativity, however, Dr Goodman teaches us how to diminish the fears and anxieties that often build up to act against our own interests. We're shown how to do this a number of different ways including more effectively brainstorming for solutions to our problems, keeping negative thoughts at bay by using the power of internal dialogue, and improving mental health through better control of our environment.

Another thing that I was struck by was the originality of these exercises. I've read dozens of books on self-help, motivation, and creativity. I've never seen many of the ideas contained within this book. Some of them are very intriguing and you'll want to try them immediately just to see the results. For example, my favorite was the use of Baroque style music in order to boost creativity. I write fiction occasionally as a hobby of mine and have always found the creative process particularly interesting. So when I read about this exercise, I just had to try it right then and there. After following through, I really saw a difference in my creative output and the quality of ideas that were generated during my subsequent writing sessions.

Simply put, if just one of the sixty three brilliant ideas contained within this book can truly help improve your life by making you more creative, successful, or happier, then it will have definitely been worth the meager price they're asking for it. I'm now able to have better control over certain aspects of my life partially due to utilizing the exercises from this book. I know that they work and that they'll work for you too if you're willing to give them an honest try. Creativity is definitely five-star material that will one day be a classic in the self-help genre.

I'm Happier

My job was at a point where I wasn't having upward mobility, and there were no prospects for a promotion. So, I tried this book on Creativity because I figured that I needed a way to gain an edge at work. I started to do them for 10 minutes before my work day started when I would normally be on social media. It took some time and focus, but again and again came opportunities to really show off my new found creativity.

First my immediate superiors began to notice, and then my colleagues started to pay attention. Some had even began to ask me what was going on in my life because I seemed like "a different person". Lately I have been taking on more responsibility in my job, and my boss even told me that I have a bright future ahead of me. I'm looking forward to what's coming, and you can bet that I'll be continuing my creativity exercises over and over again.

Good ideas, good potential, but a couple of problems

If you are feeling creatively challenged, you COULD open up this book to a random page, and you might run into some inspiration. Though there is no table of contents in the E-book version, which makes the random opening difficult.
This is a disadvantage of this book. A table of contents is particularly needed here, because each chapter is an idea that stands alone, and there is a big need to navigate freely between the chapters (unlike reading them chronologically).

This book is full of good ideas, but doesn't go deep into most of them. I think this book COULD help to inspire creativity, it is possible to get some good ideas from it.
But it is giving many ideas of WHAT to do without going deep enough into the background of the WHY and HOW.
So if you’re just starting to explore creativity, and you decide to read this book, just remember: If an idea from this book resonates with you, but feels too fuzzy, don’t let that discourage you. But simply find more ways to learn about that idea. For example, to learn more about ‘thought watching’, and the WHY and HOW of it - read “Mindfulness for beginners” by Jon Kabat Zinn.
Another example is the chapter ‘Creative Connection’ - if you like it, then really get into it: read one or all of Ken Robinson’s books (start with “The Element”). This chapter (‘Creative Connection’) is Robinson’s whole philosophy in a nutshell.

The format is of many brief to-do instructions. It could works out fine for you, or present a problem. It depends on what kind of person you are.
Most people I know, including myself (a poet and painter), need more than to-do instructions. We need to be convinced, in order to actually try out some relaxation technique, or solution-generating list. We need to understand some background about the WHY should we bother, and HOW could we go about trying it.

The WHY and HOW could have been brought into this book by deeper examples, but rarely did I find a personal example which inspired me. I did find one in the chapter “Meaning Creation”, and it was inspiring.
For the most part, the chapters in this book do not include examples. And when I say “examples”, I am talking about personal meaningful stories.
I have read many books about creativity, and the ones I found truly meaningful and helpful tell stories of personal experience which helped me take in the advice, fully understand WHY and HOW I can use it. And those books normally don’t include to-do instructions at all, but base their entire message on the stories.

Sharp and Sassy Debut!!!

Smart and Sassy Debut

This debut novel by Janet J Lawler was a delightful read from the attention grabbing opening--straight through to the sharp and satisfying ending.

Lea Lawson is that character you long to slap down a peg or two from the very first grating meeting. An A-list Hollywood actress, she's also a full-fledged brat with an attitude and sense of privilege desperately in need of deflation. We're only just settled into the opening pages of this ultimately satisfying novel when Lea takes off on a wildly careening ride through the streets of New York City behind the wheel of a stolen car; a foolish escapade that will ultimately end with her plowing through the front windows of Saks Fifth Ave.

And so it begins, we're off and running.

From the Ground Up is a sassy, touching, and steadily moving read. The cast of characters surrounding Lea's crash, burn, and subsequent forced rehabilitation, are at once memorable and endearing. No cookie cutter characters here. The dialogue is witty, sharp, and laugh out loud funny in just the right places. And when Lea reluctantly begins her inch-by-inch metamorphosis, grudgingly shedding her showy Hollywood snakeskin, it feels genuine rather than trite or fairy-tale phony. Just as the various non-preachy tidbits related to local organic farming gleaned throughout, are thoughtfully woven into the story line in such a way to feel natural, rather than a sit-up, sharpen-your-pencils environmental lesson.

Janet J Lawler is gifted with a writing style that comes across the page tight and lean. There aren't any filler lines waxing poetic and wandering aimlessly, all of which point to the authors experience as a screenwriter, where spare words and fluffy phrases are not an option.

Definitely an author to watch for future offerings!

Loved this book!

I loved this book! And I love Summer Breeze Farm –so much so that I wish it were real so that, like Lea, I could spend a summer there. The farm conjures up such beautiful images of family and simplicity, it makes me wish I had grown up on a farm.

Katie is such a strong and vivid character and was the perfect foil to (and ultimate champion of) the spoiled and reckless Lea. The whole cast of characters formed an unlikely but wonderful family with whom anyone, especially me, would be happy to share Thanksgiving.

The story’s message isn’t delivered via the philosophical musings of its characters, but rather by the actual telling of the story. This was refreshing. Scene after scene burst before me, never stalling or meandering in flowery prose. And it kept me guessing right until the end about how Lea’s journey would eventually conclude.

Even though the main character is a Hollywood actress, it’s a story to which everyone can relate. We all struggle to keep in focus the things that really matter in life. Janet Lawler has written a book that helps us do just that.

From the Ground Up is an uplifting story filled with humor, drama and, ultimately, a universal message that we should all heed.

There was a sense of delight and enjoyment while reading this book and could not help thinking what a great movie this would be. The authors descriptions brought everything she wrote about to life Understand this book was by a debut author and I'm looking forward to her future books.
