Playing with Matches

This is a trip down a very different yellow brick road from Mr. Scalzi's earlier works. It combines elements of hard science fiction, the paranormal, horror, and fantasy, and comes complete with a quite believable romantic entanglement.
This work is very readable, with Scalzi's now-standard easy to read prose, and with very good characterization of a person that could charitably be called certifiably insane. Certainly different from his prior protagonists, who tend to be very rational, common sense type people.
I did find the depicted scientific laboratory to be a little hazy; I couldn't really envision the scene properly, and there is a little bit of hand-waving in the theory area, but neither of these items seriously detract from the story or the explosive ending. The story is short, but this is due to the basic story idea not supporting any longer treatment - extending this to more words would have probably watered it down and lessened its impact.
Not what I would choose as an introduction to Scalzi as a writer, but a nice example of his constant striving to expand his authorial repertoire.

Not my favorite experiment

John Scalzi has said that this short story is "unlike any story [he's] written before." That's true enough. I like what he's written before.
OK, enough snark. I don't actually hate this story. What I dislike most is the direction it ends up taking, after some intriguing ambiguities -- and that's a matter of personal taste.
I'm all for authors experimenting and trying new things. I hope Scalzi keeps doing it -- but I also hope I like the future results more than this one.

wonderful, dark stuff!

While nontrivial in its handling of the darker side of human nature, both in the form of workplace politics and the unhealthy obsessions at home, this is a great shortish story with a taste of naughty and a better bit of interesting science. Plus who doesn't love fantastic demonology?
