During the economic turmoil in the U.S. in the years just before World War II, James Andrew Raley, a farm boy from Kentucky, joined the Armored Cavalry and after Operation Torch, transferred to the Army Air Forces. While serving as a tail gunner on a B-17, he survived a midair collision and subsequent four-mile fall in the tail section of a B-17 over enemy territory, then hid from the enemy with other survivors for several months before escaping. "I Fell Four Miles and Lived: Missing in Action -- World War II" is the unabridged true story Raley wrote in in 1945 from notes he kept in his journal.

About the Author
James Raley was born in Kentucky in 1916, the eighth of nine children. He grew up a farm boy, rode horses as effortlessly as walking, wrestled with his brothers, shot rifles, and learned the three "R's" in a one room Catholic school. When he left the 1st Armored Division for the Army Air Forces to become a B-17 tail gunner, he never imagined how profoundly his life -- and the lives of so many others -- would change, as he departed on the morning of his 13th mission.

Amazing!

Amazing story to read! And unbelievable that anyone could live through a fall of that sort, much less be able to write such a story about it. Wondered why I hadn't heard of this before, but google searches document what James Raley actually went through.
Don't have to be a WWII or military buff to enjoy this!

Fantastic!

I never knew James Raley, but his daughter Maureen (the book's editor) is my dearest friend. She brought forth his memoir as a tribute to her father who was a true hero. His story of survival through a horrific crash and hiding from enemy forces would make great fiction, but it's true, all true.
I highly recommend this book. Read the words of a hero.

The premise is wow and that's all

I have previously read of only a few of these miraculous survivals of crew, stuck in their station, falling to earth from great heights. This is one of those few. It does not go into any background nor does it go much beyond landing on the ground. It beggars belief that people could survive these events, but survive they did. This is not a book, merely a short anecdotal story and priced that way.
